Introducing KARA Handbags

CATEGORIES:Other Brands

KARA-Backpack

We’ve long lamented the dearth of reasonably priced handbag lines with a modern look, and lately, our prayers have begun to find answers. First Mansur Gavriel came along, with its elegant, understated line of functional handbags and totes, and now we’ve found KARA Handbags, a young line that just got picked up by. If you lust after Celine, Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim but want to splurge on something under $500, meet your new favorite brand.

The New York-brand, which was named after karaoke, was founded by Parson’s grad Sarah Law in 2012. Fall 2013 is the brand’s second full collection, and it covers urban-trendy ground from mini crossbodies to minimalist backpacks in leather and shearling, rendered in a limited palette of black, burgundy, tan and lavender. The implementation of shearling, which is generally a material with which accessories designers have some trouble, is particularly well done. Resort 2014, which can be seen on the brand’s website, promises of-the-moment delights like marbled calf hair that can generally only be found on handbags much, much more expensive. Not only are the bags generally much more expensive-looking and well-designed than anything else in the price range right now, but all your friends will want to know where you found such a cute bag. Get in on the action while KARA is still under the radar by checking out our picks below or shopping Shop’s fall selection.

Jennifer Aniston Sticks to Neutrals with a Chanel Flap Bag

CATEGORIES:Other Brands

Jennifer-Aniston-Chanel-Flap-Bag

Jennifer Aniston is a lady of significant means, as we all know. Her handbag collection contains every Tom Ford bag you could ever want, but the overarching theme of her collection is unquestionably black. Jen is rarely seen without a black leather designer bag, and her Tom Ford bags, while amazing, are by far the boldest bags in her collection. Here’s Jen making her way through LAX with a Chanel Flap Bag As you can tell, it’s black and fairly nondescript, so that’s about par for the course, as evidenced by “The Many Bags of Jennifer Aniston.”

Even Jen’s evening bag choices are mostly black. For a woman renowned for her classic style, I suppose this is appropriate, if a tad one-note. When she’s not rocking black, she turns to other tried-and-true neutrals, such as…brown. I don’t mean to be too disparaging of Jen’s taste in bags – individually, they’re all exquisite picks. You’d be happy to have any of Jen’s Salvatore Ferragamos or Bottega Venetas, but would you want them all? Does one need such to amass $3,000 black bags in such quantity?

Check Out All the Bags from 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target

CATEGORIES:Other Brands

3.1-Phillip-Lim-x-Target-Handbags

Generally speaking, high-low designer collaborations have seen better days. They were all the rage for a while – Lanvin x H&M, anyone? – but at some point, they jumped the shark. I’m not sure whether that moment was the Missoni x Target online ordering fiasco or the Neiman Marcus x Target x Every Designer In America three-way flop, but it happened, and ever since then, our expectations have been low, if not nonexistent. 3.1 Phillip Lim x Target is here to restore some of our faith in high-low.

Most collaborations focus on clothing, which is easier to reasonably replicate for a fraction of the original price, but Lim went all-in on a capsule collection of inexpensive bags for both women and men as well. Some of the bags are faux-leather reinterpretations of Lim hits, most notably the Pashli, but there are also some new shapes, including an orange-and-purple leopard tote that’s the star of the accessories collection and a handsome blue camouflage backpack for men. Some fans will probably be mad at the Pashli spin-offs, but it’s exactly the type of bag that Target would imitate anyway, so Lim might as well get some of the credit (and revenue) for those cheaper versions.

Check out the entire bag collection for both men and women below; these pieces will reportedly retail for between $20 and $50 when the collection goes on sale at Target stores September 15.

This Little Loewe Panda Might be the Cutest Coin Purse Ever

CATEGORIES:Other Brands

Loewe-Panda-Coin-Purse

A lot of people have a particular type of animal on which they obsess. For me, it’s bulldogs – I prefer English, but a Frenchie will do in a pinch. I’ll cross the street and chase someone down in order to pet their bulldog, even if there’s oncoming traffic. For our operations director Shannon, it’s pandas. She may not have as many opportunities to pet random pandas on the way to the grocery store, her love for the lovable bears is still strong. She already has a panda case for her iPhone, and I think she should add this Loewe Panda Coin Purse to her collection next.

Adorableness usually isn’t a quality that I seek out in my leather goods and accessories, but when executed correctly, it’s incredibly hard for even me to resist some serious cuteness. Gucci has had a monopoly on animal-themed luxury coin purses (which are maybe even a whole genre unto themselves now) for the recent past, but this Loewe piece is not only seriously cute, but it’s a slightly uncharacteristic bit of humor for a brand that’s generally quite staid and maybe even a bit conservative.

Fashion can always use more humor, more recognition that perhaps not everyone in the industry is as self-serious as we often get the reputation for being, as long as we don’t lose the luxury along the way. This little panda is a perfect example of executing that combination beautifully. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $265.

Miley Cyrus Continues to Show Some Love to Her Chanel Bags

CATEGORIES:Other Brands

Arrivals at the Los Angeles Premiere of 'Paranoia'

Miley Cyrus continues to express her undying love for leather attire and Chanel bags…and her fiance, I guess. Here she is attending the Paranoia movie premiere with a chic, black and white Chanel Boy Bag on one arm, and Liam Hemsworth on the other. (Yes, they’re still a thing!) Miley’s been repping for Chanel almost exclusively this summer (in the bag department, at least). We spotted her with her Chanel backpack just a few weeks ago in NYC, and at a separate event in LA. She’s been a fan of Chanel since her Hannah Montana days, and we’ve got plenty of proof in “The Many Bags of Miley Cyrus.”

Miley also went on a little shopping spree circa mid-July at Chanel’s London store that garnered a fair amount of media attention. But if you’re a 20 year old zillionaire, I’m pretty sure it’s your MO in life to clean out a Chanel boutique on any given day of the week. Otherwise, what are you doing, really? Besides churning out the occasional summer pop music anthem?

The Louis Vuitton Traveling Curiosities Collection Gets a New Member – a Turtle!

CATEGORIES:Louis Vuitton

Louis-Vuitton-Animals-4

Everyone loves handbags (everyone here, at least) and everyone loves animals (unless you’re a sociopath, in which case, I’m a little creeped out), so it’s not particularly surprising that the animal sculptures that Louis Vuitton commissioned from British artist Billie Achilleos have taken on a life of their own. Achilleos’ work was first intended for display at the brand’s London maison, but since its debut, the collection has traveled among some of Vuitton’s fanciest boutiques. Now that the animals are making a stop in the brand’s Waikiki store, there’s a new dude in town – a Louis Vuitton turtle.

As some of you already know, all of the animals in this collection are made out of Louis Vuitton leather goods – not the raw materials, but the goods themselves, deconstructed to their basic parts and reassembled as sculptures of animals, from the mundane to the exotic. The turtle, meant to embody Hawaiian turtle goddess Kaiula who watches over children on the shores, was made especially for the Honolulu boutique. The full collection, which you can see below, will be on display in the store through August 31.
